SUSTAINABILITY THE CAPITAL OF The nation’s capital leads in fostering a sustainable planet by helping local businesses reduce their carbon footprint. Sustainability INITIATIVES • DC is the fi rst LEED-Platinum city in the world and the fi rst U.S. city to launch a bikeshare system ( Capital Bikeshare , which now off ers more than 6,000 bikes across the city). • The District is tackling emissions from buildings and energy, the largest driver of citywide emissions. The District’s laws require a Net Zero building code by 2026, improving energy effi ciency of existing buildings and reaching 100% renewable electricity by 2032. • The city has committed to cutting carbon emissions 60% by 2030 and to reach full neutrality by 2045. • The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is investing in a zero-emission fl eet to cut air and carbon pollution.
