CAPITAL BIKESHARE

The nation’s capital leads in fostering a sustainable planet by helping local businesses reduce their carbon footprint.

INITIATIVES

• DC is the first LEED-Platinum city in the world and the first U.S. city to launch a bikeshare system (Capital Bikeshare, which now offers more than 6,000 bikes across the city).

• The District is tackling emissions from buildings and energy, the largest driver of citywide emissions. The District’s laws require a Net Zero building code by 2026, improving energy efficiency of existing buildings and reaching 100% renewable electricity by 2032.

• The city has committed to cutting carbon emissions 60% by 2030 and to reach full neutrality by 2045.

• The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is investing in a zero-emission fleet to cut air and carbon pollution. WMATA will purchase 100% zero-emission buses (ZEB) by 2027 to build a 100% ZEB fleet by 2042.
