Imagine legendary Lakota warrior Crazy Horse sitting tall atop his spirited horse, arm outstretched as he points to the lands of his people. This powerful vision was first conceived by Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear, who sought to honor Native heroes and invited sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski to bring it to life. Work on the Crazy Horse Memorial® began in 1948 and continues today, with crews blasting and sculpting the mountain year-round. When completed, it will be the world’s largest mountain carving, standing 563 feet high and stretching 641 feet long. From May through September, visitors can watch daily cultural performances and explore Indigenous history at The Indian Museum of North America.

Jewel Cave boasts more than 220 miles of mapped passageways, as well as illuminated caverns, glittering dogtooth spar crystals, whimsically named formations like cave popcorn and cave bacon, and ceilings dripping with stalactites. Insider tip: Choose from a variety of tour experiences, including Discovery Tours and Historic Lantern Tours, but be sure to reserve ahead—ranger-guided tours are the only way to explore Jewel Cave, and they book up fast.

The Lakota and other Oceti Sakowin peoples have long considered Wind Cave a sacred place. In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt signed legislation that created Wind Cave National Park, the first cave to be designated a national park. Above ground, explore more than 30 miles of hiking trails that offer ample opportunities to spot diverse wildlife and more than 100 species of birds. Bike the trails along a 109-mile crushed limestone pathway connecting Deadwood to Edgemont. A historic railway line, the George S. This non-motorized trail encourages everyone of all skill levels to walk, bike, run, or horseback ride along the path.
