THE WAREHOUSE If there’s one location in Chicago that’s synonymous with the origins of house, it’s The Warehouse. This historic club is widely recognized as a key birthplace of house music. “The Warehouse is legendary because of its innovation, the way they were able to experiment musically,” says Powell. The club’s impact can be traced to its resident DJ Frankie Knuckles, known as the Godfather of House Music. The Warehouse was also a crucial haven for the city’s Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ communities. “It was one of the first places for that community to really gather and feel like they had a home,” says Powell. The building that once housed The Warehouse, at 206 S. Jefferson St., is a designated Chicago landmark. CHICAGO HOUSE VENUES Music fans visiting Chicago won’t want to miss the opportunity to experience the city’s one-of-a-kind house venues. “There’s a rhythm around the dance floor, there’s a ceremony that’s happening that’s akin to church,” says Powell.
