Blue Mesa Reservoir, the state’s largest body of water, anchors the landscape — surrounded by mesas, rolling hills and volcanic cliffs. And at night, the reservoir reflects the stars above, doubling the view and making the sky feel even closer. By day, paddle through calm inlets or cast a line from the reservoir’s edge. Meanwhile, mountain bikers will want to detour south to Hartman Rocks — 50 miles of flowy singletrack that rollercoasters past tall granite boulders and sweet-smelling sagebrush. For an early dinner, head to High Alpine Brewing Company in Gunnison, with wood-fired pizzas, hearty salads and rotating taps. Set up camp at Elk Creek Campground , just off the north shore of the reservoir. Sites near the water offer open views and a short walk to the lake’s edge — perfect for stepping away from your tent and gazing up at the stars.
