WHY TREATIES MATTER EXHIBIT Learn about the relationship between Dakota and Ojibwe Indian Nations with the U.S. government and what is now Minnesota in “Why Treaties Matter: Self Government in the Dakota and Ojibwe Nations,” on permanent display in the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul. The award-winning exhibit, created in partnership with the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, conveys the history of sovereignty between nations in what is now Minnesota. Appreciate the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples’ deep connection to place and understand the vital importance of treaties: living documents that recognize Indian Tribes as sovereign nations. MILLE LACS INDIAN MUSEUM This lakeshore museum north of Onamia tells the story of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, with dioramas depicting traditional activities like fishing, gathering berries, trapping and hunting. Watch indoor basket weaving and drumming demonstrations as well as Tribal dance videos; take weaving, traditional cooking and beading classes; and partake in programs on maple syruping, ricing and building canoes and tipis. ALL MY RELATIONS ARTS (AMRA) AMRA is one of the few Midwest hubs for contemporary Native art and an integral place for advancing the careers of Native artists. Its national platform elevates contemporary Native artists and provides continued support for artists and art professionals.
