VOYAGEURS NATIONAL PARK Nestled along Minnesota’s northern border with Canada, Voyageurs National Park is a gorgeous water-based wilderness with more than 200,000 acres of lakes, forest and islands. With few roads inside the park, the best and most serene way to explore is by boat. Explore the four large lakes or fish in any of the 26 smaller interior lakes. Hiking is a treat with trails that wind past hidden waterfalls, ancient petroglyphs and scenic forest views. History buffs appreciate historic sites like Little American Island and Harry Oveson Fish Camp, and families with kids find plenty to love, including boat tours, ranger-led programs and convenient snack stops. There are four visitor centers to explore. The Rainy Lake Visitor Center features an ethnobotanical garden path highlighting native plants and their importance to the Ojibwe people, who lived in the area long before it was a national park. Smokey Bear Park, International Falls Voyageurs is Minnesota’s only International Dark Sky Park, making it one of the best places to stargaze or catch a glimpse of the northern lights when atmospheric conditions allow.
