LAKE OF THE WOODS In northern Minnesota along the Canadian border, Lake of the Woods is a vast freshwater lake renowned for its excellent fishing and rugged wilderness. The state's second-largest border lake offers four seasons of great fishing for walleye, saugers, northerns and more – it’s known as the “walleye capital of the world.” Winter fishing is even more popular than summer here, with resorts renting a range of deluxe ice houses. In summer, swimming and boating are highlights. Don’t miss the Northwest Angle, the northernmost point in the contiguous U.S., which can only be reached by boat or by driving through Canada. MINNEAPOLIS CHAIN OF LAKES In the state’s most populous city, the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes, including Lake of the Isles, Bde Maka Ska, Lake Harriet, Brownie Lake and Cedar Lake, offers an interconnected network of scenic lakes, parks and trails, making it easy to get a hearty dose of lake life in the city. Lake Nokomis in South Minneapolis is also a hub of activity. Go biking, walking and running along the lakes year-round. In summer, hit the beach, dine at lakeside eateries or rent a canoe, kayak or paddleboard at several lakeside outfitters. In winter, go ice skating, cross-country skiing and play hockey.
