Climate & Altitude With an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, we enjoy blue skies year-round. The state’s altitude varies from as low as 3,200 feet (1,000 metres) on the eastern half of the state to 5,280 feet (1,609 metres) in Denver to as high as 14,000 feet (4,267 metres) on the state’s mountainous western side. In winter, our great variance in topography means visitors can ski in the mountains and bask in the sun at lower altitudes on the same day. To help your body adjust, take it easy with only moderate exercise for a couple of days after you arrive.
