ROCK SPRINGS Named after a former spring that flowed through town, Rock Springs sprung from the growth and development of the area’s coal-mining industry. The booming railroad and mining work left behind a culturally diverse community, considered to be home to 56 nationalities. The railroad’s conversion to diesel and oil power in the mid-1900s drove out many of the city’s coal mines. Today, Rock Springs thrives with trona mines, oil, gas and other industry sectors, keeping the city vibrant with locals and visitors alike. Although the mining industries have changed over the years, Rock Springs is still known as a local hub for history, dining, shopping and attractions.
