Unleash Killpecker Sand Dunes EXPLORE SINGING SANDS AT KILLPECKER SAND DUNES Killpecker Sand Dunes is a vast, shifting expanse of soft, golden sand set against a volcanic butte and Wyoming’s expansive skies. Formed over millennia from lava flows and sculpted by wind, the dunes rise up to 100 feet, creating a roller coaster of hills for sandboarders, ATV riders and hikers. Among the dunes, you’ll also find striking rock formations like the 400-foot Boar’s Tusk spire and the flat-topped North and South Table mountains. Venture to higher vantage points to catch a glimpse of the rare desert elk, found nowhere else in North America, or bring binoculars and a camera to take photos of the free-roaming wild horses. ATV RIDES Motorsport fans flock to the dunes to rev up their dune buggies, dirt bikes and ATVs and tear across 11,000 acres of open land. Beginners stick to the flatter areas and smaller knolls to learn the ropes, while advanced riders show off their skills on the mammoth hills. SANDBOARDING If you’re less interested in kicking up sand with motors and tires, simply surf down the dunes on a sandboard or sled. For the best experience, ride early in the morning or later in the evening when the slopes are cooler. Be sure to bring along some wax to keep your board gliding smoothly over the grains.
