Window Rock Tribal Park & Veterans Memorial, Window Rock Diné Tah “Among the People” Scenic Road 1 100 MILES This scenic road consists of two sections of road within the Navajo Nation, from Chinle east to the New Mexico border, and from Lupton north through Window Rock to the New Mexico border. 191 1 264 2 CHINLE Brilliant red rocks, sandstone spires, dramatic overlooks and hiking trails to ancient cliff dwellings are a draw at Canyon de Chelly (pronounced de-SHAY) National Monument in Chinle. On North Rim Drive, pull over at Mummy Cave Overlook to see an ancient Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwelling with more than 80 rooms and three kivas, perched 300 feet above the valley floor. Or stay overnight at Thunderbird Lodge , a Navajo-owned hotel and restaurant on the site of an 1890s trading post, and take one of their guided tours of cave dwellings and canyons to learn about the history of Ancestral Puebloans, Hopi and Navajo peoples. 2 WINDOW ROCK Take in the sight of a soaring sandstone arch — Window Rock — at Window Rock Tribal Park & Veterans Memorial , just steps from the Navajo Nation Tribal Headquarters. Pay your respects at the memorial, which honors the many Navajos who served in various branches of the U.S. military. Many Navajo soldiers were known as code talkers for using the Diné language to create a code that was never deciphered by the enemy, ultimately helping to win World War II.
