Make an appointment to visit the nearby Black American West Museum & Heritage Center to learn about Black cowboys, ranchers and settlers in the former home of Denver’s first Black doctor. At Museo de las Americas , explore Colorado’s Latin heritage via 4,800-plus pieces of artwork spanning ancient American to contemporary times. Each spring, Cinco de Mayo celebrates Denver’s Mexican community with dance performances, food and live music, like brassy mariachi and the polka-esque sounds of norteño. In Little Saigon, savor subtle notes of lemongrass while slurping Vietnamese pho (noodle soup), tuck into Chinese dim sum and find a multitude of shops in which to treat yourself to authentic boba teas. Leadville Set amid some of our tallest peaks, the former boomtown of Leadville is ideal for immersion in the state’s mining history. At the National Mining Hall of Fame , see artifacts and explore replicas of mines. Or tour the real deal at Matchless Mine , the site responsible for the fortune of locally famous silver magnate, Horace Tabor. Soak up Old West vibes while taking in a performance at the Tabor Opera House — a stop on the Colorado Historic Opera Houses Circuit. If you’re in town in August, don’t miss the Leadville Boom Days Pack Burro Race, in which runners urge pack-loaded burros through the Victorian-era Main Street and up mountain trails in a tribute to the town’s mining past.
