Bear Butte State Park Explore the peaceful and picturesque Bear Butte State Park near Sturgis, where you can hike, camp, fish and boat. Towering above the surrounding expansive prairie, this geological formation is one of several intrusions of igneous rock in the Black Hills that formed millions of years ago. Hike to the peak for a view that spans three states. The mountain is sacred to many Native American tribes. The Lakota name is Mato Paha or "Bear Mountain."
