Louisiana is a patchwork of cultures waiting to be explored. Let’s start at the beginning with the Native Americans who were here first. At Poverty Point World Heritage Site in Pioneer, learn about the Chitimacha at one of the earliest known civilizations in North America, dating back more than 3,000 years. The first permanent European settlement in the Louisiana Purchase territory was Natchitoches, established in 1714, and a trip to the Fort Jean Baptiste State Historic Site there is a must. Four years later, New Orleans was founded, and the Cabildo and Presbytere museums are filled with artifacts telling fascinating stories. Beginning in 1719, enslaved Africans were brought to Louisiana. Whitney Plantation in Edgard and Laura Plantation in Vacherie share the real stories of their struggles in a world that offered them so little.
