In the space of one hot summer day, I walked across Civil War battlegrounds, saw a cannon made in Paul Revere’s family foundry, and meditated at a shrine erected to commemorate a saint. MONOCACY NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD On July 9, 1864, Confederate forces set up artillery at the Best Farm, firing on Union troops. Approximately 2,200 men were killed, wounded, or captured in the Confederacy’s unsuccessful campaign to take Washington, D.C. 28 / VISIT MARYLAND
