Dispersed Camping, Badlands National Park BLACK HILLS & BADLANDS REGION SLEEP UNDER THE STARS Your Next Camping Adventure Is Closer Than You Think Pitch your tent near a babbling creek or pull your RV up to a quiet mountainside lake resort loaded with amenities. Whatever your pleasure, you’ll find fun and practical places to camp around every corner of the Black Hills and Badlands. Camp among the rugged scenery of Badlands National Park at one of the park’s two campgrounds — Cedar Pass Campground and Sage Creek Campground — or on the edge of the prairie at Elk Mountain Campground in Wind Cave National Park. Make a reservation at one of the six state parks and recreation areas in Western South Dakota. They offer many modern to basic campsites and even horse camps designed specifically for campers with horses. There are also 30 campgrounds scattered throughout Black Hills National Forest that you can call home. DISPERSED CAMPING Grab a backpack and a tent and hit the trail to camp in the backcountry of our expansive public lands. Backpackers may camp in the backcountry of Badlands National Park, Wind Cave National Park and Buffalo Gap National Grassland. In Custer State Park, dispersed camping is only allowed at French Creek Natural Area. Or, you can camp anywhere away from developed campsites in the 1.2 million acres of Black Hills National Forest. Before heading out, check with the National Park Service, South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks or the Forest Service for maps and specific information on fees, rules and regulations. PRIVATE CAMPGROUNDS Private campgrounds in the Black Hills and Badlands are as varied as the landscapes surrounding them. These sites have way more than the basics, each boasting its own package of extras. They offer things like electricity, pools, convenience stores, on-site dining, tons of activities, rentals, showers and laundry to make your tent, trailer or cabin stay as comfortable as possible. Many private campgrounds can easily accommodate big rigs and offer pull-thru and full hookup sites for your RV.
