Kayaking beautiful Antietam Creek and hiking the Antietam National Battlefield trails, it’s hard to believe this place of unparalleled natural splendor once reverberated with the sounds of America’s costliest day of battle. In Sharpsburg, explore the trails, take a tour of Antietam National Battlefield, or attend annual events like the Memorial Illumination. The Pry House Field Hospital Museum is worth a visit and, while in the area, stop at the Kennedy Farmhouse, where abolitionist John Brown planned a pre-Civil War arsenal raid. Elsewhere along the Antietam Campaign Byway, you’ll find flourishing towns all open for you. Hagerstown’s Antietam Brewery serves up delicious beers with Civil War-inspired names and character. In Boonsboro, you’ll find not only stirring history, but the home of novelist Nora Roberts and a thriving cottage industry dedicated to her works. Explore two nearby sites that also changed the course of the war with stops at South Mountain State Battlefield and Monocacy National Battlefield. North of Monocacy, you’ll find downtown Frederick with 50 blocks of unique shopping, dining, and entertainment as well as the National Museum of Civil War Medicine.
