2. MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL Towering high above the treetops and juxtaposed against limitless skies, Mount Rushmore is an impressive tribute to freedom and democracy in America. The awe-inspiring granite sculpture features 60-foot faces of four U.S. presidents who played an integral role in the birth, expansion, development and preservation of the nation: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Visit the Sculptor’s Studio to learn about the carver Gutzon Borglum’s vision for the memorial and the Information Center to discover the park’s history. More on pages 34–35. Along the 0.6-mile Presidential Trail, narrow rock crevices provide unique, short-range glimpses of the memorial's famous faces. Connect to the Presidential Trail from the parking area via the short Nature Trail. Don't Miss In 2020, visitors to Mount Rushmore will be greeted by signifi cant enhancements to the memorial's Avenue of Flags, Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center and Grand View Terrace.
