CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL NEVER FORGET YOUR DREAMS Crazy Horse Memorial® is the World’s Largest Mountain Carving, in progress. Located in the southern Black Hills, Crazy Horse Memorial® is 17 miles from Mount Rushmore National Memorial and 5 miles north of the town of Custer. ® Emerging from granite and iron is the likeness of a legendary leader. More than carved rock, the Crazy Horse dream points toward commitment, a fervent legacy and a proud future. The continued focus on the Mountain Carving is the hand, right shoulder and hairline of Crazy Horse himself and the horse’s mane. Crazy Horse Memorial® features the Indian Museum of North America®, the Native American Educational and Cultural Center®, the Sculptor’s Studio Home and Workshop, Laughing Water Restaurant, a snack shop and a gift shop. Native American performances are available three times a day, in season. The Legends in Light® laser show starts after dark, May 22 to Sept. 27 in 2020. HISTORY The dream began in 1939 when Chief Henry Standing Bear of the Lakota people, asked sculptor, Korczak Ziolkowski, to create a memorial to show that, “…the red man has great heroes, also.” The first blast occurred June 3, 1948, sparking the dream to create a memorial to honor the Indians of North America that would be carried out and completed by the American people. The Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation® does not accept government funding. Work is financed through admission fees and private donations. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Once completed, the Mountain Carving will be 563 feet high and 641 feet long. The face of Crazy Horse stands 87.5 feet high — by comparison, the heads carved at Mount Rushmore are 60 feet high. 70 // #DiscoverBlackHills
