Captain Samuel Dyson commanded Fort Washington Park [3] , which sits on a high bluff of the Potomac River. Upon seeing his position threatened by a British squadron, Dyson decided to blow up the fort without a single shot being fired, an action that led to his dismissal. A new fort was completed in 1824 and played an important role in protecting Washington during the Civil War. Also on the Potomac River, Mount Welby [4] was the residence of Mary Welby DeButts, who wrote letters describing the British squadron’s advance.
