Doctorow novel is now a Tony Award-winning musical that follows three American families as they pursue the American Dream in the 1900s. The National Portrait Gallery features The Face of Battle: Americans at War, 9/11 to Now starting April 7 . The exhibit includes photos, paintings and drawings that depict U.S. soldiers in action, as well as military life since September 11, 2001. National Portrait Gallery, Kogod Courtyard, photo by Tim Evanson Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company Photo by Ecragg Hir comes to the Woolly Mammoth Theatre from May 22–June 18 . Intended for mature audiences, this alternative dark comedy examines gender power dynamics and how the past influences the future with humor and insight. The Renwick Gallery showcases Voulkos: The Breakthrough Years from April 7–Aug. 20 . In the first exhibition to focus on the early career of American artist Peter Voulkos, audiences view his revolutionary organic clay works. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts honors JFK’s 100th birthday with civic-minded performances, including dance, opera and live music, that run through June. Free shows are also offered at the Center’s Millennium Stage .
