Pioneers would have come across the same towering formations and pine-shaded bluffs on this route as they created the wagon-wheel ruts that can still be seen today. Take a hike at one of the many opportunities along this scenic and historic route. 5 WESTERN HIKING ENDEAVORS 1. Scotts Bluff National Monument is where the great plains give way to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Large rock formations rise 800 feet above the plains, acting as important landmarks to pioneers forging west. 2. Before heading out for a scenic hike at Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area, fire a few quivers at the on-site archery range. 3. A rock formation so perfectly pointy, it appears to be “Towering to the Heavens,” Chimney Rock National Historic Site and Visitors Center is an inspiring hike any time of year. 4. Lake McConaughy and Lake Ogallala State Recreation Areas are two peaceful Nebraskan lakes perfect for fishing, water skiing or just taking a hike around the scenic shorelines. 5. Stop at the Oregon Trail Historical Marker in Hastings (also the official birthplace of Kool-Aid!) and discover gems like wagon-wheel ruts and even graves. Small-Town Stop: GERING Sitting just miles away from endless outdoor recreation opportunities, Gering is a launching pad for outdoors enthusiasts. Visit in mid-July to experience Oregon Trail Days. DO – Robidoux Pass and Trading Post is a monument to blacksmiths and pioneers. EAT – Home-cooking is at its best at Log Cabin Restaurant & Lounge, where food is served in a fun, casual atmosphere. SHOP – Recently renovated, Wildcat Hills Nature Center sells souvenirs and educational materials. STAY – The wagon sitting out front of Monument Inn & Suites is a tribute to the past.
