The largest protected continuous sand dunes in the Unites States are in Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Nebraska National Forest contains the largest human-planted forest in the nation. More than 100 years ago, botanist Charles E. Bessey worked to plant 20,000 acres and created what is now a National Forest where there was nothing but plains. 3.
