The Route State 12 between South Sioux City and Valentine The Outlaw Trail Scenic Byway passes by four of Nebraska’s top spots for outdoor recreation and wildlife viewing. Perfect for a summer float, Niobrara National Scenic River offers everything from a peaceful first-time tube ride to whitewater kayaking excitement in scenic surroundings: dramatic bluffs, diverse wildlife and gorgeous waterfalls. Canoes, kayaks and tubes available for rental. 2. Ideal for birdwatching, Valentine National Wildlife Refuge can be full of waterfowl enjoying its many lakes. Birders will be delighted to also find the greater prairie chicken and sharp-tailed grouse wandering these grounds. 3. A hiker’s delight, Smith Falls State Park has Nebraska’s highest waterfall at 63 feet tall and offers some sweet spots for paddling down the river.
