In early spring, more than a half-million sandhill cranes pass through the area on their northward migration. Trips to crane-viewing blinds are available every morning and evening during March and early April. Overnight photography blinds are available. The Audubon Center offers stunning views of the Platte River, interpretive displays, gift shop and trails. Open year-round, Mon -Fri, 9 am -5 pm; Sun, 1-4 pm. Windmill State Recreation Area is one of the jewels of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission in the state’s chain of lakes along Interstate 80 (Exit 285). Situated at the Gibbon Interchange between Kearney and Grand Island, the area draws its name from the old-time windmills situated in the park. The oldest windmill is a 1880 Standard that was used to pump water for steam locomotives in Fleming, Colo. All have been restored to working order.
