NORTHERN KENTUCKY RIVER The food here is inspired by both German immigrants who settled the area in the early 1800s and Southern-rooted natives who still call this place home. REGIONAL FAVORITE 5 4 1 2 3 SIGNATURE MEAL 1. TRANSPARENT PIE: Tied to the Mason County town of Maysville, this sweet-tooth dream is a simple blend of sugar, butter, cream and vanilla. But “transparent,” it’s not. It actually bakes to a creamy, golden, custard-like appearance that’ll leave you speechless. 2. POTATO CAKES: Taking advantage of leftover mashed potatoes (ingenious!) combined with a little fl our and eggs, these are shaped into cakes and fried in an oil-coated hot skillet until golden brown on the outside, still white and creamy inside. 3. GOETTA: Most closely resembling a spicy breakfast sausage or scrapple, this iconic combination of beef, pork, peppers, onions and pin oats, cooked for several hours, is so celebrated here there are festivals in its honor. 4. TOMATO PIE: One of the most versatile dishes in the South, the most common interpretation in these parts features slices of vine-ripened tomato placed in a pie crust with onion, grated cheese and a little mayo, plus salt and pepper to taste. 5. KENTUCKY RAIN: Featuring Blue Curacao, Sierra Mist and George Clooney-endorsed Casamigos Blanco Tequila (pictured above), the brightly colored “Kentucky Rain” cocktail is named after the popular Elvis tune.
