Housed in the world’s largest log structure, the Old Faithful Inn is a National Historic Landmark built in 1904 with local logs and stone. Free tours of the asymmetrical building, which looks like it blossomed from the surrounding landscape, are offered daily from early May through early October. ENCOUNTER ANCIENT TREES Specimen Ridge, situated east of Tower Junction, has the world’s largest collection of petrified trees. The fossilized forest was created 50 million years ago when a series of volcanic eruptions covered the area in ash, mud and debris. Check out the frozen-in-time redwood at the Petrified Tree exhibit, and examine an ancient tree stump up close in front of Mammoth Hot Springs’ Albright Visitor Center. GO FOR A SPRING RIDE From late March to mid-April, stretches of road in Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks are cleared of snow but closed to vehicular traffic. In Yellowstone, cyclists enjoy 49 miles of car-free riding from the west entrance to Mammoth Hot Springs, where you can cruise past the ethereal limestone-draped terraces.
