The artisan shop collects hundreds of game and animal hides during hunting season and processes them into soft robes and leather using an intricate method that dates back to the 1700s. Medicine Bow National Forest near Laramie is arguably every bit as gorgeous as Grand Teton National Park — but less traveled with glacier-fed lakes, scenic overlooks, sparkling waterfalls and old mining camps. The peaks of the Snowy Mountains rise to 12,000 feet and dip into deep valleys, creating a dramatic landscape that will have you snapping away with your camera. HEAR THE TALES OF OUTLAWS INVESTIGATE A GHOST TOWN Established in 1867 after gold was discovered in the Wind River Mountains, South Pass City once bustled with saloons, hotels and businesses, but the population dwindled from 1,000 to a few hundred by 1872 and the town was eventually abandoned. The 1872 Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site in Laramie is rich with tales of “violent and desperate outlaws,” the most famous of which was Butch Cassidy. After the prison closed, it became a center for scientific experimentation by the University of Wyoming, a legacy that can be explored in the Science on the Range exhibit.
