SPOTLIGHT Celebrate America’s Folkways Relax in Laid-Back Rock Hall The folks in Rock Hall used to love their solitude so much they reversed the harbor’s channel markers to keep the day boaters away, but now the locals have opened their harbor and their hearts to travelers, which is good luck for us. Rock Hall’s Key West attitude comes through at traditional spots like the legendary Waterman’s Crab House and Durding’s Store, and funky fun spots like The Mainstay make this tiny port on the Chesapeake a treat. Come for the Pirates and Wenches Weekend in August for a swashbuckling good time. PHOTO: NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR THE TRADITIONAL ARTS National Folk Festival coming to Salisbury in 2018 Salisbury begins a three-year term as host city for the annual National Folk Festival in September 2018. The three-day, free, open-air celebration embraces the heritage and traditions of all Americans. It’s the nation’s longest running traditional arts event, attracting about 150,000 people each year. The foundation of the festival is music, with a breath of talent that is broad in both styles and geography. Expect to hear blues, New Orleans jazz, gospel, salsa and bluegrass. Past festivals have welcomed Japanese drummers, a Jewish Klezmer band and reggae artists. There’s a lot more than music, though. In all, more than 300 musicians, dancers, storytellers and craft artisans will perform on six stages, conduct workshops and give demonstrations. A dedicated children’s area will provide age-appropriate activities. Regional and ethnic food will tempt taste buds, and craft brews and regional wines will be available. DESTINATION MARYLAND ✥ 115
