Hunt for Fossils Formed Millions of Years Ago Towering along the Chesapeake Bay’s Western Shore, Calvert Cliffs State Park in Lusby offers park-goers a sandy beach, fi shing, a recycled tire playground, extensive hiking trails and picnic areas. But the main reason most visitors fl ock here? Fossils. More than 600 species of fossils (formed 10-20 million years ago) have been identifi ed in the massive cliffs. Marvel at imprints of prehistoric whales, 50-foot megalodon sharks and seabirds the size of small airplanes. Aboard the Maryland Dove, St. Mary’s Explore Plantation History and Life Sotterley Plantation’s roots run deep: the 95-acre National Historic Landmark was built around the turn of the 18th century. Today, the former tobacco plantation is a museum dedicated to research, interpreting and preserving history. Situated along the Patuxent River, Sotterley has nature trails, Colonial Revival gardens and historic buildings.
