Visit the museum to learn more about their lives, and visit the crash site to pay your respects for their heroic sacrifice that is believed to have thwarted an attack on the U.S. Capitol. The World of Little League Museum in South Williamsport celebrates the history and impact of this iconic youth sports league. Drive across the state on the Pennsylvania Turnpike , which opened in 1940 and was the first long distance controlled-access highway in the United States. Named after the Pulitzer-prize winning playwright August Wilson, the August Wilson Center in Pittsburgh promotes and celebrates African-American performing and visual arts in western Pennsylvania. Located near the mid-point of the trail, the Appalachian Trail Museum in Gardners preserves the history of this American icon and those that have shaped it since the trail’s completion in 1937. Each highlighting local history, there are 94 New Deal Post Office Murals in Pennsylvania, which were painted between 1933 and 1943. Murals can be found throughout the state, from Erie to Philadelphia and Scranton to Pittsburgh.
