As it turns out, that moment won’t be my only reminder. Seeing the grand carriage road and horse stables at George Washington’s Mount Vernon motivates me to gallop out to horse country in Middleburg. Touring the amazing flying machines at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center gets me thinking about President Kennedy’s call for space exploration. I make a note to visit the hallowed ground of his gravesite at Arlington National Cemetery, also the final resting place of famed explorers Robert Peary, Matthew Henson and Richard Byrd; civil rights martyr Medgar Evers; boxer Joe Louis; Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall; Challenger astronaut Judith A. Resnick; and JFK’s brothers Robert and Teddy Kennedy. But for the moment, I’m back to that glass of sweetly edged pinot noir and the foundation of a plan to visit nearby Northern Virginia, home to many of the East Coast’s most compelling boutique wineries.
