PRINCE GEORGE’S Hike, Bike or Stroll the Canal The Potomac River also played a role in the construction of the C&O Canal, a 184.5-mile path that connected coal mining areas in the Allegheny Mountains with the river’s city centers. The railroad rendered the canal obsolete shortly after its completion in 1850, but commerce’s loss is recreation’s gain. Strolling or biking on the gentle grade of the towpath or taking a cruise on a replica canal boat are leisurely ways to experience this intersection of history and nature. Step Back in Time Frederick is home to three covered bridges listed on the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places.
