See (but don’t touch) wild horses; watch as pelicans and cormorants dive into the waves for dinner; and enjoy beach access and hiking paths at Assateague State Park—Maryland’s only oceanfront state park. Heron, osprey and eagles soar over the tidal wetlands of the spectacular Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, dubbed one of the “Last Great Places” by the Nature Conservancy. For flora rather than fauna, take a stroll through Adkins Arboretum’s five miles of trails shaded by American holly, pawpaws and black gum. Migrating tundra swans return each autumn to Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge, an ideal place to fish and hike year-round. For an authentic Maryland boating experience, check out the historic log canoe races hosted by the Miles River Yacht Club. Races take place throughout the summer, but the largest is the Log Canoe Governor’s Cup Weekend in late July. Vintage skipjacks, Maryland’s historic wooden oyster boats, race each year at the Skipjack Festival.
