DC’s endlessly inviting collection of beauty, knowledge and culture is filled with wonders both celebrated and lesser-known. And they’re all free to visit.
NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AFRICAN ART
The only national museum in the U.S. dedicated to the collection, exhibition, conservation and study of the arts of Africa allows you to explore traditional and contemporary art from the entire continent, including Benin Bronzes.
Toward the western end of Constitution Avenue, the much-loved figure of Albert Einstein contemplates in bronze his most famous equations. Sculpted by Robert Berks, this four-ton genius invites children to wonder at the world with him.
On the grounds of the Capitol, discover the lush Conservatory and its outdoor gardens. Travel through different biomes (desert and rainforest included), explore the orchids and wander through a garden primeval, all in Southwest DC. Don’t miss Season’s Greenings during the holiday season, which showcases incredible plant-based replicas of monuments.
FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT (FDR) MEMORIAL
Beyond the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials lies the surreptitiously stunning FDR. As you stroll through reverent representations of his four terms in its outdoor “rooms,” marvel at the spacious, serene scene.
A giant of the world’s great art museums, the NGA brings you everyone from Van Gogh to O’Keeffe, Monet to Rothko to Pollock. Don’t miss the underground Cascade Café, the sparkling moving walkway or the rooster on the roof.
The Doric-columned structure functions as a bandstand (large enough for the entire U.S. Marine Band) and a tribute to all the DC men and women who died in service in World War I, 499 of whose names are inscribed. It is the only District memorial on the National Mall.
