Grand Junction is known as being a mecca for outdoor recreation. A lesser-known fact is that it is conveniently located near many National Park Service (NPS) sites, aside from Colorado National Monument (CNM). Grand Junction’s central location includes 31 hotels offering affordable lodging, hundreds of dining options and endless outdoor activities — a perfect home base for a “Stay here, drive there!” vacation.
After exploring the Grand Mesa National Forest, Rattlesnake Arches, and CNM in Grand Junction, guests often venture out on day trips to see other nearby national parks. If you’re looking for the ultimate public lands experience, stay in Grand Junction a couple of extra days to experience five of Colorado and Utah’s most renowned NPS sites.
BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON NATIONAL PARK

Just southeast of Grand Junction sits the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. As one of the most serene and breathtaking national parks, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison catches many by surprise with its stunning canyon views and incredible vistas. Two million years in the making, this Colorado park reveals some of the oldest rock and craggiest spires in North America, carved by the Gunnison River.
With its gravity-defying arches, this national park can be explored from your car and also has a variety of hiking trails to explore the scenic views from. From April 1 – October 31, the park does require reservations, due to the crowds, so be sure to plan ahead.
ARCHES NATIONAL PARK

Located southwest of Grand Junction, in Utah, is Arches National Park. It is the largest concentration of natural arches in the world. Fact: Grand Junction’s Rattlesnake Arches have the 2nd-most concentration of arches in the world. Known for its gravity-defying arches, this national park can be explored from your car and also has a variety of hiking trails to explore the scenic views from.
CANYONLANDS NATIONAL PARK

Also located southwest of Grand Junction is Canyonlands National Park. It is the largest national park in Utah, and offers a variety of hiking and biking trails, as well as scenic drives. The Needles District is one of the more popular areas within the park due to its unique geological features. Visitors who prefer to avoid the crowds at Arches National Park often visit Canyonlands for a more tranquil escape.
DINOSAUR NATIONAL MONUMENT

Just north of Grand Junction, spanning across the Colorado-Utah border, is Dinosaur National Monument. With over 1,500 visible dinosaur bones embedded in the rock faces, and petroglyphs scattered throughout the park, visitors are taken back in time for a truly prehistoric experience. This scenic and paleontology-filled day trip is perfect for those looking for a blast from the past.
CAPITAL REEF NATIONAL PARK

Southwest of Grand Junction, in Utah, is Capital Reef National Park. This scenic national park is filled with unique geological structures, petroglyphs, and even a historic one-room school called the Fruita Schoolhouse. Hike along the slot canyons or enjoy the peace and serenity of this underrated national park. Be sure to stop at the Gifford Homestead for one of their famous fruit pies to snack on while you cruise back to Grand Junction.
