1 TREK THROUGH THE PARK along marked trails varying in difficulty. Among favorites is The Fossil Exhibit Trail, a recognized National Scenic Trail that offers a fascinating peek into the ancient history of the park.
2 TAKE A SCENIC DRIVE and meander through towering buttes, dramatic cliffs, and striated spires on the Badlands Loop State Scenic Byway. Stop at one of the many overlooks along the way for stunning views and photos.
3 WATCH FOR WILDLIFE around every turn. The park is a sanctuary for numerous species, featuring some of North America’s rarest inhabitants. Be sure to give bighorn sheep, black-footed ferrets, pronghorns, and prairie dogs plenty of space in their home, and watch out for bison. An extensive herd of 1,200 bison is a prominent sight in the North Unit.
4 FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH YOUR SURROUNDINGS at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center in the North Unit or the White River Visitor Center on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in the South Unit. Rangers can answer your questions and provide maps and information about the park including flora and fauna identification. Learn about the area’s history and the significance of the Badlands in Lakota heritage through exhibits.
5 ENJOY THE NIGHT SKY with very little light pollution by gazing at over 7,500 visible stars and the Milky Way Galaxy. Rangers point out constellations and provide telescopes during Night Sky Programs at the Cedar Pass Amphitheater in the summer.
6 SEE PALEONTOLOGISTS AT WORK in the Fossil Preparation Lab. The park’s striking geologic deposits contain one of the world’s richest fossil beds. Ask questions to learn more about the ongoing science and research happening in Badlands National Park and learn how to notify park staff if you come across a fossil in the park!
7 GO ON A FAMILY-FRIENDLY ADVENTURE with the GPS Adventure Activity Book from the visitor center. A GPS-enabled device will help you navigate to natural features, trails, and wayside exhibits where you can learn more about the park.
