At the end of the 19th century, Hot Springs emerged in Fall River Canyon as a pioneering health retreat. Now, the town has expanded into a space for creativity and relaxation. The town is near Wind Cave National Park and two State Recreation Areas: Angostura and Sheps Canyon.
EDUCATION & HISTORY
The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs invites you to step back in time, where the bones of over 60 mammoths have been fossilized in a prehistoric sinkhole. This site, unparalleled in its mammoth bone concentration, also showcases fossils of 87 additional species from the Ice Age. Educational activities and interactive, self-guided tours await. Visitors can peek into the lab to ask questions and witness preservation techniques.
REJUVENATE
Evans Plunge Mineral Springs, attracting visitors since 1890, holds the title of the Black Hills’ longest-running attraction. Enjoy the natural spring waters and float, slide, or try your hand at the gymnast’s rings. For the ultimate spa day, try one of the steam rooms.
Nearby, visitors can stroll by the river downtown and take photos of the sandstone that’s constantly sculpted by water. Cascade Falls, a popular natural swimming hole, is another great place to cool off from a day of adventuring.
Attend the Fall River Hot Air Balloon Festival annually in August for family fun. This is one local tradition you don’t want to miss!
