A gold mine of history and fun
A mountain town, Lead (pronounced ‘leed’) is a charming blend of rich history and abundant outdoor activities. Enjoy dining and breweries in downtown Lead or stay in a variety of lodging from charming bed and breakfasts to comfortable hotels.
OUTDOOR PLAYGROUND
Warm-weather adventures include mountain biking and hiking, as well as treks along the George S. Mickelson Trail. The community is a hub of winter activity. Terry Peak Ski Resort offers graceful, yet energizing ski runs down 7,000-foot peaks. Seasonal trails are designated for off-roading and snowmobiling, as well. You can keep close to the trails with a stay at Black Hills Cabin Rentals.
Manuel Brothers Park offers splash fountains, picnic areas, and a new skatepark. A nearby golf course also adds to outdoor fun.
HISTORY PRESERVED
Lead has a deep mining history, which can be discovered at the Black Hills Mining Museum.
The Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center showcases the Nobel Prize-winning neutrino research conducted at the former Homestake Mine. View the Open Cut from the Visitor Center and learn how the mine was refurbished into a science lab.
