Art & history bring Lakota culture to life in the Black Hills and Badlands
HONORING HERITAGE
The Chatku Arts Center at Mahpíya Lúta on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is a vivid learning experience on the history, culture, and art of the Lakota. Crazy Horse Memorial® showcases Native American art and artifacts. In the summer months, visitors can engage with skilled artisans, observe traditional dances, and learn through the Living Treasures Indian Arts Cultural Exchange.
INDIGENOUS CULTURE
Western South Dakota’s indigenous history comes to life at museums throughout the region. The Oglala Lakota College Historical Center tells the story of Lakota life from the early 1800s to the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890. Engage in educational exhibits at the Oglala Lakota Living History Village near Badlands National Park.
