SCENIC COURSES

If golf is your excuse to escape into nature, Virginia’s landscape won’t disappoint. The Highland Course at Primland, set high in the Blue Ridge Mountains, offers breathtaking elevation changes and views that seem to stretch forever. Its fairways trace the contours of the ridgeline, making every tee shot as visually striking as it is technically challenging.

In Northern Virginia, Stonewall Golf Club overlooks Lake Manassas, where open fairways, rolling hills, and natural wetlands make it both beautiful and playable. Expect scenic stretches along the water, with thoughtfully framed holes that showcase the surrounding landscape.

HISTORICAL COURSES

History runs deep in Virginia, and that includes its courses. The Cascades Course at The Omni Homestead Resort is a crown jewel of American golf. Designed in 1923, it’s a timeless layout that winds through the Allegheny Mountains, where former presidents, professionals, and passionate amateurs have played for a century.

In Williamsburg, play the masterpiece that is Golden Horseshoe Golf Club – Gold Course. Designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1963, it quickly gained fame for featuring one of America’s first island greens on the par-3 16th and for hosting the prestigious Jones Cup amateur golf tournament.

Near the historic site of Jamestown, Kingsmill Resort’s River Course sits on land that was part of the original settlement area where English colonists landed in 1607. With historical markers on site and a tournament history that includes years on the PGA and LPGA tours, the River Course bridges past and present with views of the James River and a layout that’s both memorable and meaningful.

CHALLENGING COURSES

For golfers who crave a test, Virginia offers no shortage of formidable fairways. Royal New Kent Golf Club delivers a links-style experience where deep bunkers, elevated greens, and tricky sightlines keep players on their toes. If you’re up for the challenge, it’s considered by many to be the most difficult course in the state.

Full Cry Golf Course at Keswick Club, open to guests of Keswick Hall, brings Tom Fazio’s strategic brilliance to the foothills of Charlottesville. Both precision and power are required to navigate its tiered greens and well-guarded pin placements.

Set among vineyards and forests, The Club at Viniterra surprises players with elevation shifts and tight approaches, while Rock Harbor Golf Course in Winchester features inventive holes built around rock quarries and apple orchards, making it deceptively tough.

Independence Golf Club, just west of Richmond, challenges decision-making with open fairways, tall native grasses, and slick greens. Miss by just a little, and you’ll find yourself with runaway balls and tough recoveries.

Choose from two standout layouts at The Golf Club at Lansdowne. The Greg Norman Course is home to “the hardest mile in golf”—a brutal closing stretch that challenges even the most seasoned players with narrow fairways, forced carries, and punishing green complexes. The Robert Trent Jones II Course adds a different kind of difficulty, with dramatic elevation changes, heritage stone walls, and thoughtful shot-making that rewards smart play from start to finish. Together, the two designs make Lansdowne a must-play for serious golfers.
