This year marks the 250th anniversary of the United States of America, and Pennsylvania invites travelers to explore the very places where history unfolded. Many of the American Revolution’s most pivotal chapters took place right here in Pennsylvania, placing the state at the heart of America’s founding story. From Philadelphia’s historical homes to battlefields etched with sacrifice, go beyond history books with an immersive journey into the nation’s beginnings.
There’s no better place to start than America’s first capital: Philadelphia. Begin at Independence Hall, where fiery debates gave rise to two of history’s most important documents: the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Just steps away, the iconic Liberty Bell — with its famous crack — once served as a way to summon the Pennsylvania Assembly but grew to be a symbol of freedom and equality.
Nearby, Congress Hall saw the inaugurations of George Washington and John Adams, while Old City Hall once housed the U.S. Supreme Court. Wander down Elfreth’s Alley, the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in America, where cobblestones and colonial homes evoke the city’s past. Don’t miss the Betsy Ross House, where the tale of the first American flag stitches together history and legend.
At Franklin Court, explore the life of founding father, scientist, and inventor Benjamin Franklin through interactive exhibits and archaeological remains of his original home and print shop. For a deeper dive, the sweeping Museum of the American Revolution showcases powerful artifacts, immersive exhibits, and “The Declaration’s Journey” — a new exhibition tracing the global impact of America’s founding document.
Revolutionary Battlefields & Beyond
Beyond the city, Pennsylvania’s countryside reveals the revolution’s most dramatic chapters.
At Washington Crossing Historic Park, stand where General Washington and 2,400 soldiers braved icy waters for a bold Christmas night attack that changed the war’s course. Each December, history comes alive with an annual reenactment of the daring Delaware River crossing. Follow their footsteps to King of Prussia at Valley Forge National Historical Park, where hardship forged the Continental Army’s resilience. Walk through reconstructed huts, visit Washington’s modest headquarters, and reflect beneath the soaring National Memorial Arch.
In Chadds Ford’s Brandywine Battlefield Park, the scars of a hard-fought British victory linger. At the York County History Center Colonial Complex in York, tour a reconstructed courthouse where the Articles of Confederation were signed — giving birth to the phrase “United States of America.” And in Easton, join a living tradition when you watch the annual reenactment of one of the first public readings of the Declaration of Independence during Easton Heritage Day.
A Yearlong Celebration: the Semiquincentennial
America’s 250th anniversary in 2026 will be nothing short of epic. In Philadelphia, the 52 Weeks of Firsts will spotlight city-defining moments — from the first American flag to the first ice cream soda. The annual Wawa Welcome America Festival (June 19–July 8, 2026) turns the city into a weeks-long playground of music and family fun — including one of the biggest Fourth of July celebrations in the nation.
Visit the 1790s First Bank of the United States, reopening as a museum this year after an extensive renovation. Permanent exhibits on the nation’s economic history will include "People, Power, Profit in the Early Republic" and touch on topics such as currency, slavery, land, and trade.
In the fall, (Nov. 18–19, 2026), Gettysburg will host a stirring recreation of Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 visit, when he delivered the Gettysburg Address. The first words of his speech were “Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” That line is a direct nod to the birth of our nation in 1776 and what our founding fathers set forth to be.
Bells Across PA: A Statewide Art Tribute
