Alexandria/Mount Vernon
You can’t talk about this history-rich area without mentioning George Washington’s Mount Vernon. But don’t miss hidden gems like George Mason’s Gunston Hall and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Pope-Leighey House, a Usonian masterpiece designed to blend seamlessly with its surrounding landscape that also shares property with Woodlawn Historic Site.
Annandale
Home to the area’s largest Korean population, Annandale is jam-packed with authentic eateries and stores. Kogiya Korean BBQ is family owned and operated, with plenty of options for both picky eaters and adventurous foodies, but the beef bulgogi and galbi are classics. Want to try a variety? Burke/Lorton
Nature lovers, take note. Some of the best bike trails in the region can be found at Burke Lake Park and Fountainhead Regional Park, along with plentiful fishing and top-notch boating. Top off your afternoon with a pint of Siren’s Lure, a fruity and slightly hazy brew at Fair Winds Brewing.
Centreville
This neighborhood has deep connections to the Civil War, offering up unique history and attractions. Also, kids will love Cox Farms’ annual Fall Festival and Fields of Fear.
Chantilly
Just minutes from Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly features a dynamic mix of restaurants, museums and historic sites. Speaking of, the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is the permanent home of the Space Shuttle Discovery, as well as thousands of other air and space artifacts throughout the hangar-like building.
Fairfax
Head to the county seat for some much-needed retail therapy. Fair Oaks Mall offers a great mix of well-known brands like Pottery Barn and Eddie Bauer, plus local standouts like Merlo Furniture Designs. Enjoy nationally recognized entertainers and student performances at Center for the Arts at George Mason University.
Falls Church
This diverse “Little City” has main street shops, live music venues and is also home to the Eden Center, the largest Vietnamese shopping center on the East Coast. For fine dining, head to 2941 Restaurant, where Chef Bertrand Chemel’s menu draws from his Gallic heritage and Virginia’s distinct cultural mélange.
Great Falls
Great Falls Park’s majestic cascading waterfalls are a sight to behold, but the park also has 20 miles of hiking, horseback riding and biking trails that are glorious during autumn, but beautiful in every season. The surrounding area is equally scenic, and the drive to the park follows rolling hills past grand riverfront estates with lush landscaping.
McLean
In the youthful heart of this centrally located neighborhood, you’ll find Clemyjontri Park, a playground where children of all abilities can play side-by-side. Visitors can also tour historic sites like Fort Marcy, built around Washington, DC during the Civil War, then indulge at McLean Family Restaurant or Neutral Ground Bar + Kitchen.
Merrifield
Get hands on at places like District Candle Lab x Fawne, a female-founded jeweler and candle studio collab, for whimsical candle-making and a create-your-own charm bar in the Mosaic District. Dining options include local hotspot B Side and regional comfort food favorite Ted’s Bulletin, among many others.
Reston
Reston combines urban excitement with rural charm. Popular Reston Town Center has top-notch outdoor ice skating and year-round fun. (Think fantastic shopping and dining, an interactive fountain and a summer concert series.) Just a few miles away, Lake Anne captivates with unique architecture, waterfront views and small-batch brews at Lake Anne Brew House.
Springfield
Blessed with plenty of family attractions and experiences, Springfield is home to LEGO® Discovery Center, which delivers block-shaped nostalgia and interactive experiences. Prefer outdoor escapes? Go Ape Zipline & Adventure Park has high-flying zipline and ropes courses.
Tysons
You know you’ve reached Tysons when glitzy high-rises and rooftop greenery encircled by the Metro come into view. Tysons Corner Center offers great family-friendly stores, restaurants and attractions like Sandbox VR. Tysons Galleria delivers luxury brands like Gucci and Chanel, plus high-end dining.
