With vast desert skies and minimal light pollution, Arizona is a paradise for astrophiles and those fascinated by mysteries of the universe. The state is home to more than a dozen International Dark Sky Places, making it a top destination for celestial exploration. Whether peering through powerful telescopes at an observatory or attending a star party on the rim of the Grand Canyon, the cosmos have never felt closer.
Flagstaff, the world’s first International Dark Sky City, is a great place to start. The new Astronomy Discovery Center at Lowell Observatory features interactive exhibits, historical tours, a rooftop planetarium, an open deck observatory with state-of-the-art telescopes and the Pluto Discovery Dome for infinite wonders.
South of Tucson, Kitt Peak National Observatory boasts one of the largest collections of optical and radio telescopes on the planet. Meanwhile, the Gilbert Rotary Centennial Observatory, located in the Riparian Preserve, hosts public and private viewings as well as talks in the adjoining public library. At Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter, take advantage of Astronomer Nights, during which visitors shadow professional astronomers and observe the night unfold in the high-altitude air of the Santa Catalina Mountains.
Dark Sky Parks (DSP) are prestigiously recognized as public lands that not only provide exceptionally clear skies, but protect the area’s nocturnal environment and support research and education for future generations. Arizona’s designated DSPs include Oracle State Park and Kartchner Caverns State Park — both of which host regular star parties, where local astronomers set up telescopes and share their knowledge of constellations and deep-space objects. From June 6–13, 2026, attend the annual Grand Canyon Star Party, which transforms one of the most iconic landscapes in the world into an unforgettable celestial celebration. For those who prefer a more intimate experience, Sedona Stargazing offers guided tours to view spiral galaxies and planetary nebulae against the backdrop of the region’s red rock formations. Whether you’re a seasoned stargazer or just looking to spot the Milky Way, Arizona skies are begging to be explored.
