SPRING
At Lost Dutchman State Park near Apache Junction, take in views of the Superstition Mountains and desert wildflowers such as bright-yellow brittlebush, orange poppies and red chuparosa. You’ll also spot prickly pear and ocotillo, and possibly even wildlife such as roadrunners and Gila monsters (enjoy from a distance!). The campground has no size restrictions on RVs and offers electric hook-ups and water, as well as ADA-accessible camping cabins.
Just minutes from Tucson, Catalina State Park feels like an escape with its thousands of towering saguaros. Hike the Bridle and Nature trails during wildflower season (typically February and March) to be rewarded with desert chicory, lupine, purple owl’s clover and more. Bring your tent or RV to stay in the campground and wake up to views of the Santa Catalina Mountains.
Wildflower season can vary year to year, depending on snow and rainfall. Consider calling parks ahead of time or checking recent reports to catch the best blooms.
SUMMER
Along the Arizona-California border in Lake Havasu City, Lake Havasu State Park is a haven for all-out water fun. White-sand beaches beckon sunbathers and families to lounge along the Colorado River, and all types of watercraft are welcome on the waters. Bring your RV or camping gear to stay close to all the action.
Venture to an even calmer oasis at Patagonia Lake State Park in Patagonia, where 12 boat-in campsites (accessible only by boat) offer a quiet waterfront experience with incredible natural beauty. The park also offers developed campsites, as well as camping cabins with lake views. Spend some time on the sandy beach, go boating or take a hike along the creek trail to spot birds like hummingbirds, black vultures and canyon towhee.

FALL
Pleasant weather and dazzling colors signal autumn’s arrival. Spend a day at Arizona’s newest state park, Rockin’ River Ranch State Park in Camp Verde. A former ranch turned day-use park open Fridays through Sundays, this gem is at the confluence of West Clear Creek and the Verde River — meaning you’ll find a lush habitat for birds and wildlife, scenic riverfront trails and excellent fishing. Bask in golden hues of fall foliage as the cottonwood trees turn to a vivid yellow, painting the landscape with seasonal splendor.
For even more Verde River views, Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood offers a peaceful escape. Whether you camp overnight or simply use the day-use areas, stroll along lush riparian valleys lined with cottonwood and willow trees, drop a fishing line into one of the three lagoons, and keep an eye out for wildlife and birds — including a pair of nesting bald eagles. This park offers wheelchair-accessible fishing piers and camping cabins.
WINTER
During cooler winter weather, stay cozy with an indoor tour at Jerome State Historic Park as you explore the grand rooms of the Douglas Mansion, once home to mining mogul James S. Douglas, owner of Little Daisy Mine. You’ll learn about the history of Jerome, copper mining and the Douglas family through photographs, artifacts, a video and a 3D model of the town and its mines.
Or enjoy the consistently warm and humid environment of a cave at Kartchner Caverns State Park in Benson, where you’ll find an underground wonderland of stalactites, brushite moonmilk, “birds nest” needle quartz and Arizona’s tallest column. The campground offers RV back-in and pull-through sites with electric hook-ups and water, and wheelchair-accessible camping cabins are also available.
