Preschoolers

Largo Central Park has one of the most vibrant playgrounds around, with cool features like a sand-digging pit, a mini rock climbing structure, synthetic turf and a neat forest theme. The Largo Public Library next door is also top notch, with a great kids section where your little ones can browse their own literary gems.

A blonde dog and small children are seen playing in water, where the water is coming up from the ground at COACHMAN PARK.

A St. Pete standby for decades now, the Great Explorations Children’s Museum is perfect for toddlers and their developing imaginations, with interactive play areas that foster creativity and learning. Plus, it’s an air-conditioned relief during the summer months.

Let your toddlers express their artistic flair at the Morean Arts Center’s Saturdays at the Morean series. It’s an awesome free program that hosts five families at a time every Saturday at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. Call 727-822-7872 to preregister and secure your spot. And over at the Morean Center for Clay, in the historic train station building in St. Pete, there’s a free clay crafting event every Sunday for kids of all ages.

Elementary-aged

Take the ever-curious elementary school crowd to the Chihuly Collection in St. Pete. The glass museum with works from renowned artist Dale Chihuly is beautiful and educational. Your ticket also gets you admission to the live glass demonstration at the Morean Glass Studio, where at certain times of day you can watch a 30-minute demonstration of glassblowers making a new piece of art right in front of you.

Clearwater’s Coachman Park is the perfect place to let everyone play. From a pirate-themed playground ideal for kids over age 5 to breathtaking waterfront views that can be enjoyed by all, it’s a stunning spot to spend a morning. With two climbing structures, slides, a sand pit, a raised catwalk and lots of accessibility-friendly features, it’s got enough going on to entertain the kids for a while.

Treasure Island Fun Center is a hidden local gem sure to entertain kids for hours. The largest arcade in the county, it offers endless entertainment options, from air hockey to arcade games to mechanical horse rides. Admission is free; you simply purchase a play card in any amount to start playing games. And here’s a tip: This spot isn’t in the beach community Treasure Island, but rather in the middle of the county on Seminole Boulevard.

A railed walkway is shown leading up to a green and orange building, which is Atomic Claw Arcade.

Actually in Treasure Island is the newly opened Atomic Claw Arcade, which boasts more than 40 claw machines and other prize-winning games with machines stocked with plushies and toys.

Tweens and teens

Take your teens to Topgolf, where you can practice your swing in one of 102 outdoor climate-controlled hitting bays, chow down at the on-site restaurant or get a drink on the rooftop terrace. Located in the Carillon neighborhood of north St. Pete, the three-story complex offers golf enthusiasts and beginners alike a chance for fun.

The Replay Amusement Museum is a Tarpon Springs classic. You pay one price for unlimited games all day ($14 for adults and $8 for children), from vintage games like pinball machines to a rotating selection of arcade games. There are more than 100 machines total.

Consider this a more heightened version of darts. At Hatchet Hangout, which has locations in downtown St. Pete and Clearwater, you score points by throwing axes at a giant dartboard-like target. It’s an indoor recreational range set up like a bowling alley. There are safety protocols and trained staff ensuring guests (which can include anyone ages 8 and up) stay safe.

Multigenerational

Florida’s first Sandbox VR opened in summer 2024 in downtown St. Pete. It’s a full-body virtual reality experience that offers an energetic afternoon for families who want to play in one of the ultra-modern game rooms, with themes ranging from “Squid Game” to pirates. Anyone can play as long as they reach the 48-inch height requirement.

Try your hand at pickleball at Dink House, opened recently by a professional tennis and pickleball coach on Ulmerton Road. The sprawling facility features four indoor courts.

At Empower Adventures in Oldsmar, adventurers 7 years old and up can participate in thrilling activities like ziplining, paddleboarding and other team-building escapades.

Kayaking is a great family activity, and there are plenty of places from which you can launch around here. Head to Upper Tampa Bay Conservation Park near Oldsmar, a great place to see bottlenose dolphins. Or cruise past the glitzy houses along Coffee Pot Bayou in St. Petersburg for stunning views.
