Q&A WITH ALEX HARRIS
Award-winning, St. Pete-based singer and producer Alex Harris calls his city the grandchild of Nashville, Tennessee. After years on the road, the vibrant community and wide variety of music venues inspired Harris to make St. Pete-Clearwater his permanent home. It’s also where he founded the Arts Conservatory for Teens, which empowers young people to cultivate their creativity. Harris’ answers have been edited for length and clarity.
What are some of your favorite places in St. Pete-Clearwater for live music? I’ve enjoyed Hough Hall in the Palladium and intimate jazz shows at the Side Door downstairs. In St. Pete, I love the Floridian Social Club and in Clearwater, I love Coachman Park when they do the Jazz Holiday there. I love going to the Mahaffey Theater to see The Florida Orchestra as well.
What brought you to the area? It was the weather. What helped me stay was the culture. It really is a place of opportunity where we can soar, yet you still have that homegrown feeling. I’ve seen so much change for the better in our community.
How would you characterize our local music and arts scene? I would describe the arts scene as a very eclectic place for consumers and enthusiasts. It’s a creative playground, where there are opportunities to explore and really develop and hone your gifts and talents.
