With near-perfect weather year round, St. Pete-Clearwater is an athlete’s paradise, offering everything from golfing and pickleball to hiking trails and running events.

Golfers, rejoice: There are nearly 50 public and private courses throughout the region. And with a variety of gorgeous landscapes and uniquely challenging courses shaped by some of the top designers in the world, there is truly something for every golfer here. Play a round at the 18-hole, Donald Ross-designed Dunedin Golf Club, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and has hosted 18 Senior PGA Championships since its inception. St. Pete’s stunning Vinoy Golf Club on Snell Isle — only five minutes away from the historic Mediterranean-style resort and open to its guests or members — features a par-71 course with lots of water and beautiful natural scenery.

The Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club in Palm Harbor offers four courses (the Copperhead, Island, North and South courses) with a highly unusual feature for this area: hills. Featuring wide fairways and room to play, Seminole’s Bardmoor Golf & Tennis Club has been home to both the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour. If you want to hit the links at some local city course favorites, tee off at Mangrove Bay in St. Pete or Tarpon Springs Golf Course.

If you want something a little more nontraditional but similar to golf’s scoring system, try your hand (literally) at disc golf. There are a plethora of nine-and 18-hole courses located within numerous St. Pete-Clearwater parks — from Cliff Stephens Park in Clearwater to Sheffield Park in Oldsmar.

Who’s up for a game of pickleball? The fastest-growing sport in the nation is thriving in St. Pete-Clearwater, with a number of beautiful venues and resorts that have on-site pickleball courts. Escape the heat at the recently opened Dink House on Ulmerton Road in Largo, which feature state-of-the-art indoor courts, or play a few sets on one of the 14 indoor courts at the new St. Pete Athletic Paddle & Social Club in the Warehouse Arts District. The sports and entertainment complex also offers table tennis and padel tennis (a Mexican paddle sport), as well as a full-service restaurant, coffee bar and cocktail bar.

There are also a number of noteworthy resorts with on-site pickleball courts to help sweeten your stay here, including St. Pete Beach’s Island Grand at TradeWinds, Sunrise Resort and Isla Del Sol; Sheraton Sand Key Resort in Clearwater Beach; Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor; and St. Pete’s SkyBeach Hotel & Marina. Off the resorts, you’ll find friendly competition at over 60 local indoor and outdoor pickleball courts scattered throughout the area.

If you’re visiting in the fall, make sure you pack your running shoes because you won’t want to miss St. Pete Run Fest. The annual three-day festival is brimming with flat and scenic running events, a market and cafe, local food, live music and local craft beer. Choose your distance: Run Fest offers a half-marathon, 10K and 5K — all through the heart of vibrant downtown St. Pete, the waterfront and the St. Pete Pier. The family-friendly festival also features youth runs for kids and a dog walk.

Hop on a bike and embark on a cycling adventure along the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail, a linear pathway for cyclists, runners and Rollerbladers that stretches from St. Pete to Tarpon Springs. For an aerial view, Empower Adventures will send you ziplining over Mobbly Bayou Wilderness Preserve in Oldsmar. Enjoy a laid-back evening of classic Old Florida fun at St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club (founded in 1924), which offers “open shuffle” every Friday at its popular St. Pete Shuffle event.
