1 FLAMING GORGE NATIONAL RECREATION AREA

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area is a year-round fun zone for nature fans. In warmer months, ramble along more than 200 miles of hiking trails; cast a line for bass, catfish, trout and kokanee; or get out on the water for kayaking, water skiing and boating. In winter, landscapes blanketed in snow create the perfect setting for ice-fishing derbies, Nordic skiing and snowshoeing. See more on page 19.

2 KILLPECKER SAND DUNES

Play in nature’s sandbox at the Killpecker Sand Dunes, one of the world’s largest active sand-dune fields. Tackle the mammoth 100-foot hills in dune buggies, dirt bikes and ATVs across 11,000 acres of designated Open Play Area. Non-motorists can surf the sandy waves on sandboards and sleds or hike across the dunes for a glimpse of southwest Wyoming’s wild horses and rare desert-elk herd. See more on page 22.

3 THE GREEN RIVER

When you’re looking to beat the heat, there’s no better place close to town than the Green River — namesake of the charming city on its banks. Float or paddle in the flowing waters of the Green River Whitewater Park and Tubing Channel. Or, check out the river’s Expedition Island, known as a Blue Ribbon trout-fishing spot and an ideal launch site for downriver excursions.

4 WHITE MOUNTAIN PETROGLYPHS

Set along the sandstone walls of White Mountain, these petroglyphs offer a glimpse into the area’s past. Hike along a short trail to find the remarkable 300-foot cliff-face canvas. Roughly 200 to 1,000 years ago, the Plains and Great Basin Native Americans carved hundreds of fascinating petroglyphs into the rock.

5 MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAILS

Take a two-wheeled journey through southwest Wyoming, where you’ll find singletrack trails for all skill levels. Plus, you can test out some of the nation’s most sought-after trails, which include the Wilkins Peak Trail System — named one of the most popular biking trail systems in Wyoming.
